If you have ever done any serious hiking, you know that there are certain do’s and don’ts which can make the difference between life and death.  One of them is having not only enough food to make it to your next stop, but also to have enough in case an emergency prolongs your trip. Life is like that. It is a journey for which you must take with you what you need to survive and not just food for the body but food for the soul. In John’s Gospel Jesus is called “the bread of life” because his life provides the spiritual food that can keep you going through the wilderness of life’s ups and down. But if you want to partake of the food that he provides, you have to know where to find it and how to take advantage of the nourishment it offers.

Spiritual food is like physical food in that it is easy to feed ourselves on what appears pleasant to the eye and tasty in the short run only to discover that what we have been consuming are empty calories sadly lacking in nourishment for the long haul. We have to take the time to learn what is healthy sustenance and put forth the effort to have a balanced diet. Skimming the Bible, accepting conventional wisdom about what it means to be a Christian, sitting in worship as an observer rather than a participant are all ways of starving ourselves in the midst of plenty. But FirstChurch offers serious opportunities to get your spiritual daily requirements satisfied. In-Depth Studies is one of the best ways.
