Our Director of Music and Arts, Dana Effler, authored today’s blog post, giving some insider info about our upcoming Lessons and Carols service this Sunday. Please come join us at 11 a.m. for this Christmas tradition!

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is an ancient and beloved tradition of the Anglican church dating back to the late 1800’s. We Methodists inherited it from the Anglicans (our mother church) and we have been inspired by it ever since.

Most of the music you will hear in this year’s service of Lessons and Carols is preserved in the Chancel Choir‘s new CD entitled Let There Be Light. This recording project has been three years in the making and is dedicated to the memory of our dear Rev. Dr. William Jennings Bryan III. Bill was a faithful member of the Chancel Choir and also served as our choir chaplain. Always full of life and light, Bill passed away a little over a year ago from pancreatic cancer, but his light lives on in our hearts and his voice still sings each time our recording is played.

Lessons and Carols Sunday is always a festive time here at FirstChurch. It’s the Sunday when old friends reunite and new friends are made at the All-Church Breakfast, children and families gaze in wonder at the train display, and laugh together as family photos are taken beside the Christmas tree. The celebration reaches its peak at 11 a.m. as we all gather together in the sanctuary to hear the joyous carols of the season and the story of the birth of Jesus that fills our hearts and renews our hope.

Please come and celebrate with us this Sunday, December 16!
