FirstChurch Case Statement

In our 170-year congregational history, we have sought to reach into the hurt of our city with great hope. FirstChurch is the heart of the Arts District. Our church’s historic spires reach to God as our congregation’s arms reach into our city. At the crossroads of Ross and Harwood, the church has stood as a beacon of light showing God’s Love and this congregation has grown with the city around it and continues to modernize how we show God’s Love. We stand firm in the present, honor our past, and look boldly into the future God holds in store for us.

Over the last thirty years, through the faithful generosity of our devoted members, we have remodeled our sanctuary which included improvements to the air circulation system, restoration to the masonry and an installation of a new pipe organ. We have united our historic buildings with the Fiedler Atrium and added ADA accessible elevators and restrooms. With greater flexibility and access to our facility, our ministries have found a new spirit and have flourished. It is rare to find a church like First United Methodist Church of Dallas in Methodism. We are flourishing and thriving where God has planted us in our beloved city. And, now that the Dallas Arts District is growing with new businesses, new arts organizations and new residents the future is very bright to show and share God’s Love through our worship and service.

Now is the time to address again our most pressing needs to the remainder of our facilities.

Our building has served its purpose to call disciples of Jesus Christ to be the hope of God for our city. Now, our beloved building needs to be updated to serve the coming generations with the same commitment of those who have gone before us. Our thriving congregation needs renewal and renovation in order to continue our legacy of Love. To that end, our Board of Trustees have implemented a space utilization study with program and administrative staff to determine urgent needs for upgrades and updates to our historic church:

  • an expanded children’s and youth education space, with more flexible Sunday School classrooms, that would include an update to our heating and air conditioning system throughout our Education Building built in 1926 and our Crossroads building built in 1962,
  • a more multi-purpose vision for our current gym by maintaining an adaptable creative play space, with the accommodation for an alternative lecture, worship and service space,
  • the staff will move to the main campus for broader work collaboration and increased accessibility to our members, guests and one another, and
  • set apart music rehearsal spaces for our children, youth and adult musical ensembles in order to maintain greater effectiveness with our program directors, ministry volunteers and our instruments.

The total preliminary cost to care for these urgent needs is $16.6 million. Now that we are fully out of debt and financially healthy, FirstChurch is poised to deliver Christ’s ministry to our community and for the world. We are thriving because we believe in a God who so loved the world that God gave. And, God gave, so that the world might be saved through Christ. This is the heart, mind, strength and spirit of this flourishing Church today and forevermore.
