Sunday, Oct. 20
Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

For the next several weeks, our sermon theme will be The Franciscan Way of Jesus. Christ rises out of the most difficult of circumstances. Years before the Renaissance in the Western world, dire economic conditions, ego-driven political corruption, rampant incurable disease, and psychological trauma brought on by constant warring were the realities of day-to-day life for the people of Europe. It was in these difficult times that people were looking for hope. Francis of Assisi was a well-to-do son of a nobleman who came face-to-face with war, with disease, with corruption, with difficulty. After a short illness, Christ (the Word) spoke to Francis on his deathbed. Francis left his family and fortune and went on the journey of (and for) his life in search of Jesus. And, what Francis found was Christ within him.

In every transition of the Church, there are those faithful whose reforms were set through the discovery and founding of spiritual practices. So, if the United Methodist Church is reforming, then alignment with and the deepening of spiritual practices will see the Church to transformation. Francis and his female colleague Clare discerned that a total focus on Jesus was the way to resurrect the Church. The prayer is that this series will introduce A Franciscan Way of Jesus for our practice some 800 years after the Joyful Troubadour, Francis.
