Originally commissioned by NBC, Amahl and the Night Visitors premiered on December 24, 1951 in the Rockefeller Center television studio and has been a hallmark of the Christmas season ever since.  Though Gian Carlo Menotti received Pulitzer Prizes for “The Consul” and “The Saint of Bleecker Street,” this one act opera’s imaginative simplicity has prevailed as his most lasting and popular work.

This heartwarming production tells the story of a crippled young boy who is prone to hyperbole and has a vivid imagination. When he and his penniless mother are paid a surprise visit by the Three Wise Men on their way to see the newborn King, the mother is tempted to steal a piece of gold. Facing threat of punishment, the King pardons her in a great act of mercy, followed by the boy’s selfless act of generosity. As he offers his crutch as a gift to the Christ child, the story culminates in a Christmas miracle of hope and healing, proving that love is the richest gift of all.

The Rotunda Theatre’s production of this classic opera will awaken the magic of Christmas for you and your family and is our gift to you this holiday season. More fable than biblical, this opera has a runtime of 50 minutes and is well suited for children elementary age and up. There will be no cost to attend, though donations are encouraged.
