It’s Already Time For School?
July 31, 2019
As we make it through the dog days of summer, it’s hard to believe school is just around the corner! Below, our mission and advocacy minister Rev. Holly Bandel talks about our school-based ministries and outreach, and how you can get involved.
Ecclesiastes 3 reminds us that “there is a time for everything…”; a significant time for children and their families is upon us. As we become adults and certainly as our children grow older, we forget what a changing and even challenging time it is. Emotionally and socially, back to school is a marker for children. I often have memories based on what grade I was in school. In first grade, I got in trouble for talking the first week! In third grade, I broke my arm twice, and in fifth grade, I got chicken pox. We remember the impact of teachers, and the fun and trials of peer relationships.
These changes in school-aged years and challenges of growing up are significant to all of us as a part of our development. For some though, there is a real burden to going back to school. For some children (and their parents) there is a whirl of anxiety. For others, there is a burden of back to school supplies, uniforms and other necessities so that a child will have what he or she needs to be effective at school.
This is where our Mission and Advocacy ministry can really help. Our partnership with Joseph J. Rhoads Learning Center will be celebrating five years of partnership in August. I want to invite you to participate by donating underwear, socks and money for uniforms; give online with just a few clicks of a button. Your generosity ensures that each child is ready for school and alleviates some of the burden and stress for families in our school.
Last year, I tutored a first grader at JJ Rhoads. He was shy at first and then week after week, he grew more and more confident. He was an excellent reader and just needed that one-on-one time to grow. He grew beyond my expectations and even his grade level. Our incredible ministry leaders and volunteers at JJ Rhoads are ensuring that students have all the resources they need to excel inside the classroom so they can later excel outside of it.
I hope you will mark your calendars for Sunday, Aug. 25 when we will celebrate our partnership anniversary in worship and then at a lunch reception after worship. The impact of our ministry is substantial, and so many in our church family have made these last five years possible. Plan to join us as we celebrate.
Thank you for making this time a time for love, laughter and peace for all of our children.
