When the teacher called for a volunteer to read in front of the classroom, he was the last one to raise his hand. Though he loved to look at the illustrations and make up stories of mystery and adventure, he was hesitant to read aloud. Every time he would gather the courage, he couldn’t read as fast as his friends and sometimes they would laugh when he made mistakes.
Once he started Project Transformation, he began to realize that, with a little help, he could become a good reader – maybe even the best in his class! Elizabeth, a PT Corps Member at Walnut Hill United Methodist Church, observed his transformative growth. “I have experienced transformation in many ways,” she remarked. “In particular, we had a little boy who didn’t even know the whole alphabet when he first started our program. Now, he is able to read an entire book! It is truly rewarding and a blessing to be part of this program.”
