Why FirstChurch – Bill Bexley
March 21, 2017
I have been a member of FirstChurch for over 40 years. Initially, it was my love of a traditional church service and the music program that made the 20+ miles to church worth the drive, but over the years I have come to realize that it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I met my wife here, we raised a son who has grown to be a loving Christian husband and father, and we have made amazing friends.
In the beginning, I didn’t know how I could help change the lives of those around me, much less the unfortunate people around the world. But as time passed, FirstChurch helped me discover numerous opportunities to work in the community and to provide resources to better the lives of others.
One such opportunity occurred when our Sunday school class invited a refugee from Liberia to share his personal survival story. After he was selected to come to the United Sates, he created a non-profit organization to improve the education of young people in his native land, thus helping the people break the cycle of poverty. In support of his mission, our class raised enough money to build one hundred school desks, helping not only the students but also the local community members who built them.
I thank God every day for bringing me to FirstChurch. This community has filled my life with love and has given me countless opportunities to show that love to others. I’m grateful for the mission and ministry we share and look forward to all the ways we will continue to walk in faith together.
